Ramazan Sönmez, the Chair of the Çameli Trout Producers' Association, says that Çameli is now a disaster area “in which almost 9 million fish have perished”.

Sönmez told the Anatolian News Agency correspondent that heavy rain had ruined his trout farms.

He went on to tell how the rivers burst their banks and great waves of water and rubbish overwhelmed the fish ponds, Sönmez continued “We, the fish farmers of Çameli who have been meeting Turkey's fish needs for some time are now asking the government for help. There are no fish left in our ponds. All the ponds are full of flood water and rubbish. Almost 9 million fish were destroyed. 8 million for eating, 400,000 mature females, 10,000 hatchlings, all killed in the flood waters.

Sönmez wants everyone to know that Çameli, near Denizli, is now a disaster area and went on to say “ “Unless we get help from the government, Denizli will lose its place in the list of important trout production areas. Some form of special scheme must be set up for the Çameli fish farmers.”
